Muad'Dib: "Well to start it seems I am the would-be oldie of the clan - aged 21 - which seems to be a little older than your other clan members. I usually live in Manchester but at present am staying with my mother and my girlfriend in Bolton. I don't wish to sound depressing but ...(CENSORED FOR SENSITIVITY OF MATERIAL)... Anyways, enough of that. My real name is Darren Tuppen and like yourself have been playing games most of my life - first owning Sinclair +2, Commodore 64 and an old Atari. Looking at the games you recommend I see we have a little in common. I too am a fan of GTA3 though I did find several faults that could have been ironed-out with a little more development. Similarly, I am and have always been a huge fan of Starcraft (and Warcraft 1, 2 and many other Blizzard titles) though I confess to being more than a little dissapointed with Warcraft 3 which hasn't moved the genre forward one iota. The best strategy game in my mind is Shogun: Total War and the expansion The Mongol Invasion - very in-depth and very challenging (especially on expert!) I am looking forward to Medieval Total War which should be wicked. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to buy Advance Wars yet, though I have heard it is v. good. Like you say on your web-site F-Zero is a very good handheld racer and if you haven't already tried it I would recommend Ecks V Sever which is a more than competent FPS. Perhaps my fondest gaming memory (I'm sure you agree on this) is playing Deus Ex through from start to finish and importantly, witnessing all three different conclusions (remember, the game offers you three alternate choices as to the fate of the future world state). This game offered a level of involvement AND freedom so seldom seen in modern games which is silly really seeing as modern hardware is so capable (all Hail Warren Spector!). Im also a fan of Sega (Super Monkey Ball is absolutely wicked) and the X-box has a few good games (Halo, Jet-Set Radio Future, Project Gotham and DOA3 are all excellent in their respective genres. Another developer who deserves much respect, though mainly for his ambition rather than his programming, is Peter Molyneux. Ever played Black & White? Nice idea but the execution was flawed, even with the final patch installed the game was full of bugs. But still Molyneux was trying to do new(ish) things and in my mind that is more worthy of praise than releasing generic titles that, while being polished, lack the creative spark. I will stop myself short now because I am in danger of going on, I don't have the time and I'm sure you don't have the patience! However, I will ofcourse tell you a little about my online experiences which mainly comprises of 12 hour long bouts of CS :) You see it is a little hard to play games like Shogun, UT and Quake # on a 56k, I find that my ping seldom falls below 300. However, with CS if i'm lucky it hovers around 200 which is fast enough (just) for me to compete. I'm not boasting but when my ping is around 200 I find that often I can win even against people with broadband. This is assuming ofcourse I am better than they. If we were of the same ability they would wipe the floor with me because 56k blows! I am working and so funds are not a problem, the only thing that stops me from upgrading to broadband is that I am always moving around and so I would end up paying the installation charge every couple of months! Perhaps you would have some advice for me as to which is the best route to take? Because upgrading to broadband would make playing CS so much more fun, hearing a footstep followed by someone getting a heddie on me before I even get chance to react would all be a distant memory. Anyways, I have babbled for far too long and am being pestered to help unpack my gear which is lying downstairs in the hall. What fun. If you need any more info just let me know.." Back |
